Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery was last year’s winner and shone through as the most welcoming museum after being road tested by undercover families against 20 points on the Kids in Museums Manifesto.
Nominations for Kids in Museums’ Family Friendly Museum Award 2016 can be made by anyone – visitors, volunteers and museums themselves. They can vary from big national museums to tiny local galleries. It can be volunteer-run or boast a team of curators. It can be best known for its outstanding collections or be alive with high-tech interactives (or both!). What matters most say Kids In Museums is that it provides an excellent family friendly experience.
Anyone in the museum send in a nomination – they just have to argue passionately that their museum should win.
“The more you tell us, the better chance your museum will make it to the shortlist,” say Kids in Museums. “We love to hear lots of details. Be sure to include as many visitor comments and support for your nomination as possible. The Award is a great chance to ask your visitors what they think of your family offer and to measure your museum against the 20 points on the Kids in Museums Manifesto. Use it as an opportunity to do a family friendly audit of your museum.”
Last year saw a record 850 entries and once again a group of volunteers will sift through hundreds of nominations and whittle them down to a shortlist, which will be announced on July 19. The shortlisted museums will then be tested anonymously by families and the winner announced in September.
