Keen bakers and afternoon tea enthusiasts are being encouraged to hold a Great Walrus Tea Party, inspired by the Horniman’s iconic taxidermy walrus, as a way for supporters of the site to offer financial backing while its doors remain closed.

Participants are being encouraged to hold their event on Wednesday 24 June, or failing that any time throughout the month.

The campaign has been fronted by actor, writer and comedian Jo Brand, who hosts Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice.

“If you love the Horniman as much as I do then why don’t you join in by holding a virtual Great Walrus Tea Party? Bake your walrus-themed cakes, invite your friends to join in online and make a donation,” Brand urged as the virtual event was announced. “Every penny will help the Horniman inspire future generations of London’s families and school children with lifelong curiosity.”

The Horniman is making Great Walrus Tea Party fundraising packs available via its website to help as many people as possible to take part.
