A new Culture Secretary has been appointed as part of a reshuffle announced today by Number 10.

Lucy Frazer has been made the second Culture Secretary under Rishi Sunak during his circa 100 days as Prime Minister.

Frazer becomes the 12th appointment to the role by the Conservatives since 2010, and the first to serve with the title ‘Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport’.

Sunak’s reshuffle is part of the creation of four new departments. The responsibilities for the country’s digital industries have been split from the Culture Secretary role to a new department.

Frazer replaces Michelle Donelan – who served as Culture Secretary for five months – who will lead one of the new departments as Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology.

Downing Street said the reshuffle would create a “re-focused Department for Culture, Media and Sport” which will “recognise the importance of these industries to our economy and build on the UK’s position as a global leader in the creative arts.”

Frazer’s predecessor Donelan brought some professional experience in media to the role, having worked at both Sky and American wrestling brand WWE in marketing roles.

Frazer is a former barrister and appears to have no professional experience in culture, media, or sport. She has been MP for South East Cambridgeshire since 2015, and was formerly Minister of State in the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities from October 2022.

She was Minister of State at the Department for Transport from September to October 2022, and was Financial Secretary to the Treasury from September 2021 to September 2022.
