Appointments
Adem Holness has been appointed Head of Contemporary Music at the Southbank Centre, and will lead its contemporary music programme. Currently Relationship Manager (Music) at Arts Council England and Programme Consultant at the Dugdale Arts Centre in Enfield, Holness joined the Southbank Centre’s Artistic Programming team in mid-September.
Openings
The Museum of Homelessness (MoH) has revealed plans to open its first dedicated location, with a new museum at Manor House Lodge in Finsbury Park, London. Set to open in Spring/Summer 2023, the location will serve as a hub for community services, a creative hub and arts studio.
Exhibitions
At the V&A South Kensington is a temporary, free exhibition running until the end of October. ‘R for Repair: London x Singapore’ explores what it calls ‘repair culture’ through a collection of broken objects which have been creatively and artistically restored.
A new exhibition in London will bring together three royal artists, for the very first time, each with a unique perspective of working with the Queen. Opening in tribute to Her Majesty on 28th September at Quantus Gallery, ‘Majesty’ features the work of Rob Munday, Frances Segelman and Christian Furr, all of whom have portrayed the Queen during her life variously through photography, holography, painting and sculpture.
Through newly uncovered stories of African and Asian children in the care of the Foundling Hospital, the history of London life in the eighteenth century will be told by The Foundling Museum’s new exhibition. Featuring personal letters, employment notes, court reports and Hospital records, the exhibition will follow the lives of the children. ‘Tiny Traces: African & Asian Children at London’s Foundling Hospital’ runs 30 September 2022 – 19 February 2023. ‘Injecting Hope: The race for a COVID-19’ is a free exhibition at the Science Museum which will explore the worldwide effort to develop vaccines at pandemic speed. Featuring stories of collaboration between scientists and innovators, the exhibition reveals how their efforts have shaped the world. 30 November 2022 – 7 January 2024.
Architectural highlights across seven continents including London St Pancras Station have been painstakingly recreated in LEGO as part of a new exhibition at Garioch Heritage Centre. ‘Brick City’ celebrates iconic buildings worldwide with up to 180,000 LEGO pieces per exhibit by artist Warren Elsmore. Runs 22nd September – 31st October 2022.
Leicester Museum & Art Gallery has opened ‘Parallel Lines’, the first major review of the work of British artist Eileen Cooper OBE RA. It is curated by Kathleen Soriano, independent art curator, writer, and television broadcaster.The exhibition brings together over 40 different artworks produced over Cooper’s 40-year career. These works are displayed alongside paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture from Leicester Museums & Galleries’ art collection. These feature works by L.S Lowry, Pablo Picasso, Paul Rego and Therese Lessore. 10 September – 27 November 2022
A massive, illuminated moon created by artist Luke Jerram has previously made its way around the UK for ‘Museum of the Moon’, now it is the turn of planet Earth. Stopping next Derby Cathedral, ‘Gaia’ by Jerram, will see a sculpture of our own planet hung from the Cathedral’s ceiling.
Knitters from across Cardiff who created a bespoke jumper and belt to celebrate a major America wrestling event in the city now have their work on display. The jumper, which took 140 hours to create, was presented to wrestler Drew McIntyre to celebrate the WWE Clash at the Castle event. It will be displayed at the National Wool Museum until 3 November 2022.
Leeds Art Gallery is calling on the city’s painters, sculptors, photographers, moving image artists, and artists working in all media, to put their creations forward to be considered for the Leeds Artists’ Show. Opening in February 2023 during the Leeds 2023 Year of Culture, the showcase will bring together work by artists from across the city.
A new exhibition at Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery is bringing together, for the first time, hand-carved wood sculptures by sculptor Alison Crowther and charcoal drawings by landscape artist Kate Boucher. ‘Alison Crowther and Kate Boucher: Traces in the Landscape’ runs from 21 September 2022 – 26 November 2022
Funding
Manchester Museum, part of The University of Manchester, is asking for public support to help raise £10,000 to restore and install a real Tenontosaurus skeleton in its Dinosaurs and Fossils gallery. The skeleton, which dates back around 110 million years, was found in Montana, USA. Previously displayed in the museum standing upright, new research from Earth Sciences students from the University of Manchester has shed light on how the skeleton would have walked and posed in life. The Tenontosaurus will be the focal point of a brand-new display devoted entirely to dinosaurs opening in February 2023.
