Appointments
- Jane Bleach, Chartered Accountant and business consultant, and Hywel Mathias, global hospitality and leisure operator, have been appointed to the Board of Trustees at Milton Keynes museum and heritage attraction Bletchley Park.
- Manchester Jewish Museum has appointed an Interim Chief Executive after its CEO Max Dunbar announced he is to step down from the role at the end of 2021.
Openings
- Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is to partially reopen next April, with new exhibitions and live events while electrical upgrades continue at the venue.
- The Brunel Museum has received planning permission for the latest phase of its Brunel Museum Reinvented project, which is set to transform the visitor and heritage experience of the museum in Rotherhithe.
Exhibitions and displays
- Consisting primarily of loans from across the UK and Europe, a new Stonehenge exhibition at the British Museum will shed new light on the story of the landmark, and the recently discovered ‘Seahenge’ structure. 17 February – 17 July 2022.
- The National Army Museum in Chelsea and internationally acclaimed and award-winning historian, writer, and broadcaster James Holland are to open Brothers in Arms, an exhibition that tells the story of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry from D-Day on 6 June 1944 to VE Day 8 May 1945. The free, temporary exhibition runs until 6th May 2022.
- Talking Heads, an exhibition of clay sculptures inspired by Elisabeth Frink, has begun at Dorset Museum. The heads on display are the expression of a creative process during six workshops at the museum which began in March 2020, aimed at adults with learning difficulties, men with mental health issues and older people suffering from isolation and loneliness during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.
Funding
- The Scottish Government has pledged £2.3 million to the Scottish Crannog Centre, a living museum, after a fire in June destroyed its reconstruction of an Iron Age Crannog.
International
- Barbados is to build a new heritage district designed by architect David Adjaye, which is to include a transatlantic slavery museum and a major research institute and a memorial. It will be located just outside of the country’s capital Bridgetown with construction set to begin a year after Barbados’ recent establishment as a republic.
