Appointments
Sir Nicholas Coleridge CBE, Chair of the Victoria and Albert Museum since 2015, has been appointed as the new Chair of Historic Royal Palaces, and will serve from 1 November 2023 to 31 October 2026.

London Transport Museum has announced the opening date of its new gallery, which will display what it claims is one of the world’s largest collections of 20th century graphic art and design.

Bath & North East Somerset Council said it is supporting the Trustees of the Bath Postal Museum as it makes plans for the future of its collection after its recent closure. The privately-run museum moved to the Old Post Office Building in Milsom Quarter in 2006. The museum said its lease had come to an end, and it could not find alternative premises. Its collection will be relocated to other museums and the Bath Record Office.
Exhibitions
The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum has collaborated with Oxford-based Rebellion Publishing on a new exhibition which will explore the art and history of British war comics. (Pictured above) ‘Into Battle: The Art of British War Comics’ will feature original comic artwork on public display for the first time, and on show will be satirical comic strips and patriotic illustrated story papers of 19th Century and early 20th Century, to the revolutionary comics of the 1970s. Runs from from 1 October 2023 – 30 April 2024.
The National Gallery will display six of Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna’s paintings The Triumphs of Caesar, loaned from the Royal Collection by His Majesty The King, later this month. Thought to be Mantegna’s greatest masterpiece, the paintings will be on show at the Gallery for a period of around two years, while the Mantegna Gallery at Hampton Court Palace, is closed for maintenance work. The display sees the longest period that any of these works have been shown away from their usual home. Opens 18 September 2023.
The Design Museum’s ’Designing the Beautiful Game’ exhibition is to move to the FIFA museum in Zurich. First displayed at the Design Museum last year, it is claimed to be the first major exhibition focusing on the design aspects of football. The exhibition has now been developed in collaboration with the FIFA Museum, bringing additional objects from the museum’s own collection. Opens 13 October 2023.
Opening later this week, The Scottish Maritime Museum (Denny Tank) in Dumbarton will explore Scotland’s forgotten history of industrial whaling in ‘All mortal greatness is but disease’. Audio installation, photographs, artworks, artefacts and textiles will be displayed, drawn from its collection and on loan from the South Georgia Heritage Trust and the Scottish Fisheries Museum. The exhibition focuses on Scotland’s “substantial but largely forgotten contribution to this industry and the Scots for whom whaling provided an unrivalled opportunity for prosperity and adventure” and concludes with a look at whaling across the globe today. Opens 17 September 2023.
Leighton House in London has announced a new exhibition for autumn which will use an AR gallery experience to allow visitors to interact with the works. ‘Maha Ahmed: Where Worlds Meet’ presents the first artist’s retrospective, featuring miniature paintings “which fuse multicultural art traditions”. The AR experience will see theartworks coming to life through animation. Runs 21 October 2023 – 3 March 2024.
The archaeological traces left by man will be explored in a new, multimedia installation opening at Gosport Gallery this autumn. ‘Unearthing’ is a multimedia, immersive installation that combines locally discovered archaeological finds with sound and light projections which “tells the story of man’s journey through time to the present day – the Age of Man.” Commissioned by Hampshire Cultural Trust, the exhibition is a new artwork installation by Surrey-based Mary Branson, best known for her large-scale conceptual light works, in particular for her sculpture New Dawn which is located at the entrance to St Stephen’s Hall in the Houses of Parliament. Runs 7 October 2023 – 6 January 2024.
A survey of contemporary ceramic artist Nicholsa Lees is to be displayed at Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery. The award-wining artist’s work is held in public and private collections in the UK and internationally, and ‘Nicholas Lees: Abstract Vessels’ will display his work in objects and drawings which “investigate the uncertainties of boundaries between forms, space, and the viewer.” Runs 19 September – 18 November 2023.
Funding
The Bowes Museum in County Durham has been awarded funding by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to carry out conservation work on the Museum’s Silver Swan, an 18th century automata featuring 2,000 moving parts and three clockwork mechanisms. 2023 marks the 250th anniversary of the Silver Swan first being exhibited in James Cox’s Museum of Mechanical Marvels in London 1773.
The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and DCMS have backed six culture and heritage research projects with £3.1m.The research projects will contribute to the DCMS Culture and Heritage Capital Programme, and are hoped to create a basis on which to evaluate the contribution of culture and heritage to society.
