A protest is set to take place next week in response to the threat of job losses at museums and libraries in Wales.
The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union announced the protest which will take place outside the Senedd in Cardiff Bay on Tuesday 27 February 27. The museum and library will have a 10.5% reduction in their funding for the upcoming financial year.
The union has previously warned that the cut at Museum Wales and the National Library would mean its national venues could “cease to fully function”.
The union is calling on the Welsh Government to increase spending on its museums and libraries, instead of cutting funding. It said there are fears more than 150 jobs could be lost in the next two years.
Institutions potentially affected by the cuts include the National Museum Cardiff, National Waterfront Museum, National Slate Museum, National Roman Legion Museum, St Fagan’s National Museum of History, Big Pit National Coal Museum and National Wool Museum.
PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote said: “Following a decade of underfunding, the culture sector in Wales has been hit particularly hard by cuts in the draft budget.
“We’ve made it clear that we want to engage with the museum and the library to help mitigate the impact of these cuts but we will resist any compulsory job losses.”
Union members at National Museums Liverpool recently began an eight-week strike over pay, which has caused a number of its venues to close.
