A new funding package to support the development of resilience in Scotland’s museums and galleries has been announced.
The Capital Resilience Fund 2023 will make grants of between £5,000 and £60,000 available to non-National accredited museums and galleries in Scotland.
A total of £500,000 will be made available to support increased energy efficiency, reductions in running costs and the prevention of increases in maintenance and repair costs.
Earlier this year, a total of 20 museums in Scotland were awarded a share of £573,985 by the national development body Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) through its Resilience Fund via support from the Scottish Government.
Museums Galleries Scotland said this year’s funding packaging will benefit projects which directly reduce carbon emissions or have a positive environmental impact.
CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland Lucy Casot said: “Focusing on lowering running costs and increasing energy efficiency will safeguard these spaces for years to come and better support our ambitions to become sustainable organisations that aspire to reach net zero.”
Scotland’s Culture Minister Christina McKelvie said the cost of living challenges were having an impact on the ability of museums to run their services.
Applicants must submit an expression of interest by 7th November. Submission deadline for applications is Tuesday 21st November 2023.
McKelvie said the half million pounds “will enable the museum sector to be more energy efficient. In particular the fund will prioritise projects that will directly reduce carbon use or have a positive environmental impact.
“As well as encouraging the sector to be more sustainable, the aims of the fund align with our national priorities and will contribute to Scotland’s target of net zero emissions by 2045.”
