A new series of audio guides celebrating women and gender non-conforming artists in public collections will launch at Tate Britain later this month.
Art historian, author, curator and broadcaster Katy Hessel has launched the ongoing series of guides in partnership with five institutions.
The series has already launched in the US at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Tours will next launch at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and The Hepworth Wakefield.
It will then launch at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. and Tate Britain later this month.
Hessel said it is hoped that the project “will help focus attention on the works by women that already exist in collections worldwide”.
The series is a continuation of Hessel’s work via The Great Women Artists Podcast and Instagram account , and follows the publication of her debut book, The Story of Art Without Men.
At The Hepworth Wakefield, Hessel will look to British modernist Barbara Hepworth, focusing on three of her sculptural works.
Following the recent rehang of Tate Britain’s free collection displays, Hessel will spotlight seven masterpieces by women and gender non-conforming artists.
The Museums Without Men audio guides will continue later this year at institutions including the Belvedere Museu min Vienna.
