Conservation equipment and display specialist Conservation By Design (CXD) has supplied a range of products to the renowned Durham University after it made a significant investment to the University Library facilities.

The award winning University library has benefitted from a brand new lab, purpose built to meet the needs of the onsite conservation team. The lab was supplied with a number of pieces of high-tech CXD equipment, including a large scale suction table, drying rack and archive boxes for the on-going repackaging of the archives.

Liz Branigan, head of conservation at Durham University Library explains: “As a team we cover Heritage collections which includes Special Collections, Archives and the University Museums and were unable to process all of the conservation work here at the library until we moved to our new lab last year. The new facilities have created much needed space in which we have been able to accommodate specialist equipment as well as hosting outreach sessions and training programmes. Although large in size, the drying rack has been made to our bespoke requirements and is able to be moved around the room creating more flexibility in the use of our space.

“The department as a whole has become much more efficient since the move,” Liz added. “Where the object conservation work was previously outsourced to freelance services, it is now facilitated in house, where we have the space for outside specialists to be able to come and work. I have used CXD in the past when sourcing millboard and packaging particularly archive boxes, and have always found them to be both competitively priced and well stocked. The decision to source our new equipment from them was an easy one to make and we will continue to work with them to meet our conservation product needs in the future.”
