Museums Sheffield is celebrating after securing £697,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund following a successful bid in partnership with leading design consultancy Mather & Co.

Awarded to redevelop Weston Park Museum, the grant will realise an ambitious programme of work developed in conjunction with Mather & Co., including a full redesign of the About Art and History Lab galleries, alongside updates to the Sheffield Life & Times and What on Earth. Other gallery areas, including the upstairs picnic space, will also see improvements.

“Weston Park Museum has a rich heritage of content to draw inspiration from, but ensuring you’ve got the funding to deliver a great exhibition can be challenging,” said Chris Mather, Managing Director at Mather & Co. “We are delighted that our designs helped Museums Sheffield to secure such a great sum of HLF funding to develop Weston Park and create an even better visitor experience.”

The redesigns will provide Museums Sheffield with the flexibility needed to be able to change displays more often, and showcase even more of the city’s fantastic collections, from visual art to archeological finds and artifacts.

“We’re hugely grateful to HLF for supporting our plans for the redevelopment of Weston Park and to Mather & Co for their vision in helping us imagine a fantastic, bright future for the museum,” said Kim Streets, Chief Executive of Museums Sheffield. “Weston Park has been a huge success, but has the potential to be even better. The redevelopment will enable to us to share even more of the wonderful stories from Sheffield’s collections.”

Work is due to start on site in summer 2015, with the last of new galleries unveiled in October 2016.
