Buttress is an AJ100 architectural practice with more than a decade of experience providing architectural, conservation and masterplanning services to the museum and heritage sector.
We are recognised for our skill and creative response to the reuse of existing and often complex cultural buildings. While a great deal of our museum portfolio includes existing buildings, we are equally as adept in creating new, inspirational architecture, and have a large and diverse portfolio of delivering museum and heritage work on a national scale.
Through these experiences we have developed a thorough understanding of the museum building as a visitor hub, platform for storytelling and at times its own exhibit. Our approach incorporates consideration of collections care; presentation and access; strategic planning for visitor experiences; building function; spatial design and presentation of stories and experiences.
All our design work is underpinned by a philosophy that architecture is about people as much as it is about buildings and that building should be shaped by their surroundings, their role and the people who’ll use them. We work with, not for, our clients. Engaging with, listening to, challenging the conventional, testing ideas to establish a working relationship whereby we become one of the team; immersed in the project, taking on its aims and ambitions.

“Throughout both phases of this project, Buttress have provided an excellent and creative service. Due to the nature of the scheduled site and listed buildings, the architectural and practical challenges were numerous but Buttress have consistently overcome the difficulties, working with the client to ensure a successful conclusion. We cannot recommend them enough.”
