Museum Services

Museum Exhibition Mountmaking

Since the early 1970s, when Plowden & Smith mounted the landmark Tutankhamun exhibition, we have been known throughout the world for the quality, innovation and excellence of our exhibition and display mounts.

Today, our ability to interpret ambitious design ideas into cost-effective and innovative display solutions can be found in museums around the world.

Every one of our mounts is custom made for the object using the finest conservation-grade materials. We work with steel and stainless steel, brass, acrylic, resin, wood, glass and Corian to create mounts that display the object to best effect. Finishing, including powder-coating, patinating, brushing, polishing or spray-painting the surface, completes the look.

Museum Conservation

Our dedicated team of conservators join us from some of the most prestigious conservation training courses and museum conservation studios, allowing us to offer world class conservation, collections care and exhibitions services.

Our inter-disciplinary approach to conservation results in innovative, long-lasting solutions for some of the most challenging materials to preserve and is valued by institutions around the world.

All our conservation practices are informed by the latest advancements in scientific research, guided by contemporary ethical theory and underpinned by internationally recognised standards of best practice. Our Conservation Managers ensure that all suitable treatment methods and processes are explored, that conservation ethics, best practice and health and safety is rigorously adhered to, and that excellent results are achieved in a cost-effective and timely manner.

Testimonials

“As you probably know, Samson returned to Norfolk on Monday, amongst much excitement from colleagues here at Norfolk Museums Service. He is looking truly splendid!

It has been a complex project in so many ways and full of challenges from all angles. But I just wanted to express my gratitude to everyone at Plowden & Smith who contributed to this project over the past 4 years and who have been so helpful and accommodating.  It has been a pleasure for me to work with Loredana on the treatment process at each stage and to have the opportunity to share ideas and discuss options, and to be able to visit the studio regularly to see progress. I’m sure not every client is fortunate to do so. Loredana’s work has been outstanding.

Much thanks also go to Alice for the considerable complexities of logistics and finances, and most recently thanks to Camilla and Alison who have helped to facilitate the BBC AR app.

Thank you also for creating a great solution for the mount , (I would be grateful if you could pass on my thanks to Adam).

Thank you once again and I hope we get a chance to work with Plowden & Smith again in the future.”
