Four trustees have been appointed to the Science Museum Group by the Prime Minister, serving roles in sustainability and climate change, engineering and technology, and senior level leadership. The newly appointed trustees will serve for four years, until 31 May 2026.
The Science Museum Group consists of The Science Museum in South Kensington,The Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, The National Railway Museum in York, Locomotion in County Durham, and The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford.
Professor Stephen Belcher has been appointed as a Sustainability and Climate Science Trustee. Professor Belcher became Met Office Chief Scientist in 2016 and leads a team of around 800 technical and scientific staff, which includes research into processes and predictability of weather systems, research into the physics of climate change within the Met Office Hadley, and development of technology to translate this research into operational systems.
He serves as a member of the Government Chief Scientific Advisors network and on the World Meteorological Organisations Science Advisory Panel.
James Bilefield has been appointed a Senior Level Leadership Trustee. Bilefield serves on a range of public, private and not-for-profit boards across the technology, services and charitable sectors, and is also an advisor to the UK Cabinet Office, McKinsey & Company and SystemIQ, and has chaired the Digital Advisory Board of the Science Museum Group since 2015.
Tim Dugher and Professor Washington Ochieng have been appointed as Engineering and Technology Trustees.
Dugher has spent 45 years in the rail industry, progressing from Engineering Apprentice to Chief Operating Officer of Angel Trains Limited. He is a Chartered Engineer and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and former Chairman of its Railway Division Board.
Professor Ochieng is Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chair in Positioning and Navigation Systems, and Senior Security Science Fellow at Imperial College London. Formerly, he was Head of the Centre for Transport Studies and Co-Director of the Institute for Security Science and Technology at Imperial.He is also a Fellow of the UK Institution of Civil Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN) and Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.
The Trustee roles at the Science Museum Group roles are not remunerated.
