Appointments
The Ashmolean Museum has appointed Liam McNamara as Keeper of Antiquities and Dr Jennifer Sliwka as Keeper of Western Art. McNamara is currently the Lisa and Bernard Selz Curator for Ancient Egypt and Sudan at the Ashmolean, a post he has held since 2010. Dr Sliwka is currently at King’s College London where she is Senior Lecturer in Christianity & the Arts, a collaborative MA with the National Gallery London, and Deputy Director of a major international interdisciplinary project called The Visual Commentary on Scripture.
The British Museum is to begin a search for its next Director in Autumn. Its current Director Hartwig Fischer has announced he will step down from the position in 2024 after eight years. An official leaving date has yet to be announced.
Openings
A large section of Roman wall in the City of London is now on display at a student and office space.The City Wall at Vine Street was created by Urbanest as part of the company’s redevelopment of the site. The centrepiece of the display is a segment of London’s Roman Wall, thought to have been completed between AD 190 and 230, which once encircled the city.

Exhibitions
Over 30 new portraits, painted by David Hockney at his studio between 2021 and 2022, are to go on display at the National Portrait Gallery for the first time later this year. ‘David Hockney: Drawing from Life’ was last staged at the Gallery for 20 days, prior to its closure due to Covid. The exhibition will include examples of Hockney’s most recent portraits, seen for the first time, including a painting of singer Harry Styles (pictured above). Runs 2 November 2023 – 21 January 2024.
Tate Britain will present a major survey of the work of artist Sarah Lucas next month. ‘Sarah Lucas: Happy Gas’ will feature more than 75 works spanning four decades, including existing sculptures and photographs and new works. Sculptures of seated figures will sit alongside large-scale photographs of the artist from throughout her career, including her earliest and most well-known portrait ‘Eating a Banana’. Runs 28 September 2023 – 14 January 2024.
A group of young people have worked with Sussex-based photographer Rachel Poulton to create new photographs exploring the topography of Brighton & Hove past and present. ‘Brighton Seafront Through Our Eyes’ at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery will display the resulting photographs, created as part of Photography Club, an initiative from Photoworks for 13-16 year olds from Brighton & Hove.
The Walker Art Gallery has announced the five paintings shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize 2023. The winner will be announced on 14 September 2023, and the winning painting will be acquired by the Walker Art Gallery, while the artist will also have a future solo display at the gallery.

Funding
Trusts behind a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Museum of Lead Mining are among the recipients of a shared £4.4m in funding for Scottish heritage. The funding has been awarded by the National Heritage Memorial Fund as part of the Covid-19 Respond Fund to counter the impacts of the pandemic.
