An icon of English literature, William Wordsworth’s romantic poetry crosses generations. His literary works clearly highlight the relationship between humans and nature through the power of his vocabulary.

Wordsworth’s home – Dove Cottage – was both his creative catalyst and haven, within which he created his greatest works. All of which took inspiration from the breath-taking Lake District landscape surrounding the property.

The aim of The Hub’s work at Wordsworth Grasmere was to create a seamless link to the landscape which the writer loved and lived in. Diverse exhibition displays offered historical replications of his home life at Dove Cottage, whilst interactive galleries in the museum provide visitors with the opportunity to learn the meaning and history of his words.

Alongside interpretation and exhibition displays, The Hub delivered visitor amenities, including a new reception, shop and signage.

To develop synergies between displays and the landscape, natural materials were utilised throughout. The retail space, for example, contains exposed Oak unitary, highlighting the bespoke craftsmanship of the company’s in-house joiners.

One showstopper at the visitor attraction is the ‘Wordwall’ within the entrance to the museum. A true favourite of The Hub project team, the word wall consists of backlit and mounted MDF letters, which highlight the depth and force of his words.

With many integrated display structures, visitors can interact with Wordsworth’s works through a variety of mediums – sound, touch, and visuals.

The Wordsworth Grasmere project delivery demonstrated The Hub’s ability to effectively manage complex projects, with its team carefully managing and mitigating risks brought by a delayed base build and a worldwide pandemic.

By encouraging open and honest communication and creating a collaborative environment, The Hub and professional team were proactive in monitoring and adapting work schedules. Working in sequence with the base build contractor to minimise programme time, whilst maintaining a high quality fit out and service.

Innovative solutions were sought throughout the project’s delivery, adding value at every opportunity. One such key element is an interactive map, 3D printed by The Hub to provide a geographically correct interpretation of the Lake District.

The Hub transformed the visitor experience at the Wordsworth Museum and Dove Cottage, delivering an extensive package of interpretative and exhibition fit out works, bringing to realisation the life, home and works of Wordsworth.
