In the role she will assume in January, Stewart will lead strategy and planning for curatorial, educational, and public programming initiatives.
Described by the Academy Museum’s director and president, Bill Kramer, as a “powerful leader in the film world”, Stewart joins from the University of Chicago’s Department of Cinema and Media Studies.
Aside from her academic commitments Stewart serves as director of the university’s Arts + Public Life initiative, which provides access to arts programming through artist residencies, arts education, creative entrepreneurship, and artist-led programs and exhibitions.
“I am excited to join the Academy Museum team at this critical moment for the institution, and for our world, to engage visitors and partners in accessible, multifaceted conversations about the history of filmmaking and the impact that cinema has on our lives,” Stewart notes.
Prior to joining the permanent staff, the new chief artistic and programming officer has served on the curatorial advisory committee for the Academy Museum’s upcoming exhibition Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles is set to open it doors to the public at the end of April 2021, having been pushed back due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
