Appointments

  • Arts&Heritage has appointed Jonathan Nash, Strategy & Planning Co-Ordinator at National Museums Liverpool, as its new Chair, replacing Peter Bromley who recently retired from his role at the North East Cultural Partnership and as Chair of Arts&Heritage.

Exhibitions and displays

  • The Museum of Liverpool’s Wondrous Place gallery, which celebrates the city’s cultural impact through arts and sports stars, is set to reopen this month after being closed for more than three years. 26 November 2021.
  • Virtual museums platform Curatours has opened its debut ‘Museum of Plastic’, a results of the British Council’s Creative Commissions programme, which is available through VR headsets and PCs.

  • Opening this Saturday, an exhibition of original illustrations, storyboards and sketches from the making of The Snowman will feature in a new exhibition at Newarke Houses Museum. 13 November 2021.
  • A never-before-heard song recorded by two members of The Beatles has been played at the Liverpool Beatles Museum after the recording was discovered in an attic last year.
  • At the end of this year The National Gallery will feature American artist Kehinde Wiley, most famous for his commissioned portrait of Barack Obama, in a new exhibition which will explore the artistic conventions and canons of the Western landscape tradition. 10 December 2021 – 18 April 2022.
  • Sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor’s large scale underwater installations, which double as habitats for life on the seafloor, will be on display at the West Downs Centre in Winchester. From 15 November 2021.
  • The first major retrospective exhibition of British musician Amy Winehouse is to open at London’s Design Museum. Amy: Beyond the Stage will feature outfits and personal items related to her creative process. Opens 26 November 2021.
  • Contemporary artist’s Pippa Hale’s play-focussed work will form an installation at the National Railway Museum’s upcoming  ‘Wonderlab’. Spring 2023.

Awards

  • The National Justice Museum has been awarded the Best Museums Change Lives Project at this year’s Museums Change Lives awards for its Make it Yours: Workshops in an Envelope project.
  • The Brunel Museum volunteer Gill Howard has won the ‘Bringing Innovation Award’ at the London Volunteer Heritage Awards.
  • Alford Heritage Museum in Aberdeenshire has been awarded Category A listed status by Historic Environment Scotland (HES).

Events

  • Upcoming Sky Original movie, The Colour Room, which is based on the rise of one of Stoke-on-Trent’s most famous former residents, Clarice Cliff, will include scenes recently shot at the Gladstone Pottery Museum.
